Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori was born in 1870, Chiaravalle, Italy.  Montessori was the first woman to graduate from University of Roma La Sapienza and became the first female doctor in Italy.  Through her scientific observation and medical practice, she studied how children learn and established that education is not what the teacher gives but is a process that is spontaneously carried out by what an individual finds in the environment that surrounds him/her.

In 1907, she founded the first school for children called ‘Casa dei Bambini’ or ‘Children’s House’.  Through her observation, she developed specialized material which enabled children to absorb knowledge effortlessly from their surroundings.  There she developed what is now known as the ‘Montessori Method’ or ‘Montessori Approach’, which focuses on quality rather than quantity.  The success of her school created interest in surrounding countries and is now Internationally known.

Since her creation began, there have been many associations created in her name.  Some have altered her methods and amalgamated them with other philosophies.  At Monkey Tree Montessori Preschool, we follow what Dr. Montessori created over a hundred years ago.  It is a method that has lasted over a century and continues to gain popularity from it’s success.
